A baily is a castle´s avant corps (in dutch: voorburcht),
the building that lies, when approaching a castle, in front of the castle. Often, the baily has gone or has been altered
into an annex building. The baily of Doornenburg is completely intact and is in fact the only building that has not been
destroyed. In a medieval baily, much of the daily activities took place. Often, there was a farm house, there were
stables, soldiers were practising and there was a chappel. It also had a military function. All of this
can still be seen at Doornenburg.
